Around 1:30 this afternoon, it occurred to me that I was getting hungry. Instead of fighting the long line of cars at the new Chick Fil’A across the street, I remembered that someone told me about the fantastic hamburgers at Kym & Bev’s Grill. The grill is located at 400B Old Nashville Highway (next to a market I don’t know the name of and across the road from the bait/general store – Big Someone’s).

I parked my car and was a little nervous about going in because there was no neon “Open” sign. The big sign on top of the building and the hours posted on the door encouraged me to just open the door, and I was warmly welcomed by who I think must’ve been Bev. She asked, “You wanting to carry out?” Yes, indeed I was. She handed me a menu and pointed out the specials written on the dry-erase boards on the wall. When I saw hot fudge cake, I was ready to just order that and forget everything else. They also had (well crap why didn’t I take notes?!)… ummm…. I think a chicken parmesan, maybe an open faced beef sandwich. I do remember seeing mac & cheese and wondering if it’s nice and creamy or lumpy.

But I settled on the cheeseburger and fries because I always try to go by the “KISS” rule (keep it simple, stupid!). Bev told me it would take a few moments because they cook everything fresh and as she handed to order through the window to Kym, her daughter flashed a big smile and went right to cooking. I wandered around looking at the pictures on the wall. While I waited, I read the Rutherford Reader and Yvonne Moon’s brilliant article about a woman who is a foster mother after having been neglected and raised in the foster system herself. The restaurant did smell a bit like cigarettes, which is my only criticism of the place. But as a reformed smoker, you know how annoying we are! ha.

When my food was ready, Bev packaged it in a recycled Kroger bag. I found that to be very charming and it made me really appreciate that this is a Mom & Daughter business and – just like the rest of us - they’re just trying to make a living!

I drove back to my office and had to fight for my fries from a couple of my agent friends. One said he thought the fries needed pepper. One suggested salt. As for me, I just added ketchup and I was happy. The burger is humongous, though! I had to stretch my mouth wide to get my teeth around it. Yes, that is too a challenge for me! Wink wink. The burger and fries make me think it should be found at an old-fashioned soda and ice cream place – like Mel’s Diner on Happy Days. Was Mel’s owned by a plump, jolly man or one of Asian descent? Or both?

The prices were pretty fair … $4.99 for a lunch special featuring one meat and two veggies, plus a roll or corncakes. They also have a plate lunch for $5.99 which has hamburger steak, chicken tenderloin strips, grilled chicken fillet, pork chops, country fried steak, or catfish fillets (along with salad or coleslaw, french fires or baked potato, and roll). The cheeseburger was $3.35 and fries $1.19 (I could’ve selected fries, onion rins, potato wedge, or tater tots). There are a variety of sandwiches to choose from besides the burger. I paid $6 and that included tip for my lunch.

Kim & Bev’s also features a breakfast menu. They have the selection of one or two eggs with various breakfast meats, biscuits, omelettes, “hot” cakes (I called ‘em pancakes), and side orders that include hash browns, grits, gravy, oatmeal and tomato.

They’re open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 pm. and Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to Noon. Closed on Sunday. You can call in your order at 213-2378 and I’m thinking they probably cater.

If you go there, tell Kym and Bev that you heard about them from us! Bon appetit!

Kym and Bev's Diner‎

By Tyna McDuffie  (from Urbanspoon.com)- Mar 19, 2010

I think Kym and Bev's Diner is the cat's meow! It is fun as well as delicious. If you've never been you really don't know what you're missing. I like that it's a meat and three, so you can eat quickly or if you need some company, you can stay for hours and be entertained. I really love Kym and Bev, so why don't you go and try them out?
